The Crediton Heart project is a small local charity with some big plans. Last year we created this unique community website and we’re now working to develop a new multi-use building offering all sorts of exciting opportunities for local people. But to achieve this ambitious project we need more people to join us. Heart Project Trustee Nancy Murgatroyd explains what we have achieved so far, our plans for the future and how you can get involved.

The Crediton Heart project has been working to support the people of Crediton and the surrounding villages since 2018. In May 2020 we received official recognition as a registered charity. As Crediton expands it should have the help it needs to keep its character and avoid becoming a dormitory town to Exeter. This is our mission: ‘To keep the heart in Crediton’.

We are trustees who share our energy, interests, knowledge and expertise to help us get things done and we are looking for people to join us. Maybe you would enjoy being part of the Heart Project or maybe you know someone who could be really helpful.

Our projects are research and consultation led; we sum them up as ‘Clicks & Bricks’. We work together, developing our local online community presence and planning a new community building.

As trustees we have overall control of the charity and are responsible for making sure it’s doing what it’s set up to do. You may be a great organiser, enjoy working with a group of people to achieve a common objective. Networking or fundraising might be your skill. Perhaps you have been a trustee or governor before and could share your learning and experience. The project to create a new building has many facets particularly in a post Covid, environmentally conscious world. Do you have the skills to help with that?

In 2018 there was no ‘go to’ website for information about the Crediton area, leaving businesses unsupported and residents missing out on the myriad of opportunities around us. We have created Crediton In & Around and it is developing all the time.

Businesses, community groups, local venues are all listed for free. The lively, magazine style website has published over 150 articles written by local people on all manner of topics.

Our What’s On calendar is gathering quite a following and we are developing a section which will encourage visitors to use local businesses and enjoy all our area has to offer. Our social media engagement is active, relevant and going from strength to strength.

We actively support all the existing venues in the area through all our online work. Although there are many great venues available in Crediton and the surrounding area, our research and consultation has demonstrated that a larger performance space, larger than any currently available, would be a real plus for Crediton. Incubator business units and meeting rooms, rehearsal space and ways of catering for those who need support are all under discussion as is a potential site. This is all very exciting.
