Crediton Radio is a not-for-profit, volunteer-led podcast that’s working towards becoming a full-time community radio station. With some simple training, they’re enabling local people of all ages and backgrounds to make radio shows that matter to them. Coordinator Jake Lloyd explains how it all started.
In late 2019, a small group of us had the idea of starting a community radio station for Crediton and the local area. As the name suggests, a community radio station is a station that’s owned and run by the community it serves. It is not-for-profit, volunteer-led, and with some simple training, it enables local people of all ages and backgrounds to make radio shows that matter to them.
These shows can be interviews, music, drama, stories, poetry, sounds from nature, or a mixture of all these things. The only limit is your imagination!
Up until the Coronavirus began, we were at the research stage of this idea - visiting other stations and learning from them.
But as a ‘lockdown’ became a reality for us all, we fast-tracked our plans, and launched as a simple, non-live, online radio show (also known as a podcast).
We hope that this ‘Crediton Radio’ podcast will allow us all in the town and surrounding villages to come together in a safe way - for fun, learning and support - through these strange and uncertain times. And eventually, we’d like to build towards becoming a 'proper' radio station.
You can listen at www.creditonradio.org. And if you have no internet, you could ask someone to 'download' episodes to put on a CD for you.
But we’d love to encourage any of you that are interested to get involved in making some radio with us as well. There are lots of ways to do this. No experience is necessary, and you don’t even need to leave your house!
You don't need expensive equipment - the microphone on your phone or computer is probably fine. And you don’t need a lot of training either - your ideas and stories can be more than enough.
You might like to record a short talk about something you know; if you’re an aspiring musician, you might like to share your music with us; you might like to recite your favourite poem, or maybe you have some old recordings lying around that you think might be interesting to others. Better still, you might have some ideas of your own.
So if you’d like to get involved at Crediton Radio, then get in touch:
